ST PETERSBURG, Russia, July 26 (Reuters) — An explosion hit a major gas pipeline in northwest Russia early on Thursday, an official with the local administration said.
"It is an explosion on a trunk gas pipeline under high pressure," said Valentin Sedorin, a spokesman for the Leningrad region where the blast took place.
It was not clear if the pipeline carries gas for export. There was no word on casualties but witnesses spoke of a massive blast that shook buildings 5 km (3 miles) away. Officials did not say what caused the explosion.
