It's just about impossible to explain this without resorting to diagrams. Sufffice it to say that a mirror doesn't reverse left-right (X axis) or up-down (Y axis). It does reverse objects in the Z axis (perpendicular to the mirror surface). It only seems to reverse left to right, because in your mind when you compare the mirror image to the original, you rotate the original along the Y axis to do the comparison. This was your choice -- not the mirror's.

Get a book that explains the mathematics of symmetry and this should become clear.
